Barbra Streisand is due to make her debut performance in Israel this June, acceding to the request of President Shimon Peres to be the opening act at the fifth Israeli Presidential Conference, according to a report by Channel 2 aired Saturday.
The Jewish-American singer will perform before a total of 40,000 audience members in two performances in mid-June at Tel Aviv's Bloomfield Stadium, according to the report, which also stated that ticket sales have yet to commence.
One of the best-selling musicians of all time, Streisand has sold some 72.5 million records in the United States. She performed at last month’s Oscars for the first time in 36 years, and is fondly remembered for her role in the 1983 film adaptation of Isaac Bashevis Singer's "Yentl" (1983).
Streisand was supposed to perform in Israel in 2008 for celebrations marking the country's 60th Independence Day, but pulled out of the event, citing personal reasons.
Streisand was one of the big-name guests slated to appear at a festive Jerusalem convention hosted by Peres in May of that year.
She was slated to perform a rendition of the Hebrew prayer Avinu Malkeinu, or Our Father Our King.
But she notified the Israeli government roughly a month before that event that she would not be able to attend after all, due to unspecified personal obligations, her spokesman Dick Guttman said.
The Israeli Presidential Conference is due to be held this year on June 18 to 20.
