Hezbollah CFO Hassan Fahs has fled Lebanon and crossed over into Israel carrying $5 million in embezzled funds, Al-Arabiya reported Saturday, citing an unverified reported by news website Now Lebanon. Israeli officials immediately denied the report.
According to the report, the 29-year-old Fahs – a telecom engineer who ran the organization’s communication network – stole a large amount of money from the group’s coffers, then defected to Israel. He was said to be carrying documents and maps pertaining to Hezbollah’s terrorist activity.
The Israeli denial was followed by similar a denial by Hezbollah, according to Israel Radio.
Al-Arabiya noted that Fahs was arrested in September on suspicion of embezzling funds and collaborating with Israel. He was arrested along with four other Hezbollah operatives in what was reportedly a joint Hezbollah-Iranian operation.
Israel Radio quoted Israeli officials as saying that the report, which was originally published in Lebanese media, was false.
