A miséria causada pelos árabes

Doadores internacionais garantiram quase 4,5 bilhões de dólares como ajuda para Gaza no início deste mês. Nestes últimos anos, tem sido muito penoso para mim testemunhar a situação de deterioração humana na estreita faixa onde morei quando era criança, nos anos 1950.

A mídia tem a tendência de atribuir o declínio de Gaza somente às ações militares e econômicas israelenses contra o Hamas. Mas tal análise míope ignora a causa fundamental do problema: 60 anos de política árabe objetivando a perpetuação do status dos palestinos como refugiados sem pátria, a fim de usar o sofrimento deles como uma arma contra Israel.

Quando eu era criança, em Gaza, nos anos 1950, experimentei os primeiros resultados dessa política. O Egito, que então controlava o território, realizava operações do tipo guerrilha contra Israel a partir do território de Gaza. Meu pai comandava essas operações, executadas pelos "fedayeen", palavra árabe que significa "auto-sacrifício". Naquela época, Gaza já era a linha de frente da jihad (guerra santa) árabe contra Israel. Meu pai foi assassinado pelas forças israelenses em 1956.

Foi naqueles anos que a Liga Árabe iniciou sua política de refugiados palestinos. Países árabes criaram leis especiais projetadas para tornar impossível a integração de refugiados palestinos da guerra dos árabes contra Israel em 1948. Mesmo os descendentes dos refugiados palestinos que nascem em outro país árabe e moram nele por toda a sua vida não podem, jamais, obter passaporte daquele país. Mesmo que se casem com cidadãos de um país árabe, não podem se tornar cidadãos do país de seu cônjuge. Devem permanecer "palestinos" mesmo que jamais tenham colocado os pés na Margem Ocidental ou em Gaza.

Essa política de forçar uma identidade palestina sobre essas pessoas eternamente e de condená-las a uma vida miserável em um campo de refugiados foi projetada para perpetuar e exacerbar a crise dos refugados palestinos.

O mesmo se deu com a política árabe de superpopular Gaza. A UNRWA (Agência das Nações Unidas de Assistência Para os Refugiados Palestinos), cujo principal apoio político vem de países árabes, estimula altas taxas de natalidade, premiando as famílias que têm muitos filhos. Yasser Arafat disse que o útero de uma mulher palestina era a melhor arma que ele possuía.

Países árabes sempre se esforçam por classificar tantos palestinos quanto possível como "refugiados". Como resultado, cerca de um terço dos palestinos em Gaza ainda vive em campos de refugiados. Durante 60 anos os palestinos têm sido usados e abusados por governos árabes e terroristas palestinos na guerra contra Israel.

Agora é o Hamas, uma organização terrorista islâmica apoiada pelo Irã, que está usando e abusando dos palestinos para seus próprios propósitos. Enquanto os líderes do Hamas se escondiam em seus bunkers e túneis cheios de provisões, os quais eles prepararam antes de provocarem Israel a atacá-los, civis palestinos eram expostos e pegos no fogo cruzado mortal entre o Hamas e os soldados israelenses.

Como resultado de 60 anos dessa política árabe, Gaza se tornou um campo de prisioneiros para 1,5 milhões de palestinos. Tanto Israel quanto o Egito temem a infiltração terrorista de Gaza – mais ainda desde que o Hamas assumiu o governo – e mantêm controle acirrado sobre suas fronteiras com Gaza. Os palestinos continuam a sofrer dificuldades porque Gaza continua a servir como plataforma de lançamento para ataques terroristas contra cidadãos israelenses. Esses ataques vêm na forma de mísseis do Hamas que, indiscriminadamente, têm como alvo jardins de infância, casas e estabelecimentos comerciais.

O Hamas continuou com esses ataques por mais de dois anos depois que Israel se retirou de Gaza na esperança de que esse passo daria início ao processo de construção de um Estado palestino, levando finalmente à solução pacífica de dois Estados para o conflito entre Israel e a Palestina. Não havia "ciclo de violência" na época, nenhuma justificativa para nada que não fosse paz e prosperidade. Mas, em vez disso, o Hamas escolheu a jihad islâmica. As esperanças dos moradores de Gaza e de Israel foram "satisfeitas" com miséria para os palestinos e mísseis para os israelenses.

O Hamas, um representante do Irã, tornou-se um perigo não apenas para Israel, mas para os palestinos, e também para os Estados árabes vizinhos, que temem que o avanço do islã radical possa desestabilizar seus países.

Os árabes alegam amar o povo palestino, mas parecem mais interessados em sacrificá-lo. Se realmente amassem seus irmãos palestinos, eles pressionariam o Hamas para parar de atirar mísseis contra Israel. Em longo prazo, o mundo árabe deve terminar com o status de refugiados dos palestinos e seu conseqüente desejo de prejudicar Israel. Está na hora de os 22 países árabes abrirem suas fronteiras e absorverem os palestinos de Gaza que desejam começar vida nova. An Arab-Made Misery

International donors pledged almost $4.5 billion in aid for Gaza earlier this month. It has been very painful for me to witness over the past few years the deteriorating humanitarian situation in that narrow strip where I lived as a child in the 1950s.

The media tend to attribute Gaza's decline solely to Israeli military and economic actions against Hamas. But such a myopic analysis ignores the problem's root cause: 60 years of Arab policy aimed at cementing the Palestinian people's status as stateless refugees in order to use their suffering as a weapon against Israel.

As a child in Gaza in the 1950s, I experienced the early results of this policy. Egypt, which then controlled the territory, conducted guerrilla-style operations against Israel from Gaza. My father commanded these operations, carried out by Palestinian fedayeen, Arabic for "self-sacrifice." Back then, Gaza was already the front line of the Arab jihad against Israel. My father was assassinated by Israeli forces in 1956.

It was in those years that the Arab League started its Palestinian refugee policy. Arab countries implemented special laws designed to make it impossible to integrate the Palestinian refugees from the 1948 Arab war against Israel. Even descendants of Palestinian refugees who are born in another Arab country and live there their entire lives can never gain that country's passport. Even if they marry a citizen of an Arab country, they cannot become citizens of their spouse's country. They must remain "Palestinian" even though they may have never set foot in the West Bank or Gaza.

This policy of forcing a Palestinian identity on these people for eternity and condemning them to a miserable life in a refugee camp was designed to perpetuate and exacerbate the Palestinian refugee crisis.

So was the Arab policy of overpopulating Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, whose main political support comes from Arab countries, encourages high birth rates by rewarding families with many children. Yasser Arafat said the Palestinian woman's womb was his best weapon.

Arab countries always push for classifying as many Palestinians as possible as "refugees." As a result, about one-third of the Palestinians in Gaza still live in refugee camps. For 60 years, Palestinians have been used and abused by Arab regimes and Palestinian terrorists in their fight against Israel.

Now it is Hamas, an Islamist terror organization supported by Iran, which is using and abusing Palestinians for this purpose. While Hamas leaders hid in the well-stocked bunkers and tunnels they prepared before they provoked Israel into attacking them, Palestinian civilians were exposed and caught in the deadly crossfire between Hamas and Israeli soldiers.

As a result of 60 years of this Arab policy, Gaza has become a prison camp for 1.5 million Palestinians. Both Israel and Egypt are fearful of terrorist infiltration from Gaza -- all the more so since Hamas took over -- and have always maintained tight controls over their borders with Gaza. The Palestinians continue to endure hardships because Gaza continues to serve as the launching pad for terror attacks against Israeli citizens. Those attacks come in the form of Hamas missiles that indiscriminately target Israeli kindergartens, homes and businesses.

And Hamas continued these attacks more than two years after Israel withdrew from Gaza in the hope that this step would begin the process of building a Palestinian state, eventually leading to a peaceful, two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There was no "cycle of violence" then, no justification for anything other than peace and prosperity. But instead, Hamas chose Islamic jihad. Gazans' and Israelis' hopes have been met with misery for Palestinians and missiles for Israelis.

Hamas, an Iran proxy, has become a danger not only to Israel, but also to Palestinians as well as to neighboring Arab states, who fear the spread of radical Islam could destabilize their countries.

Arabs claim they love the Palestinian people, but they seem more interested in sacrificing them. If they really loved their Palestinian brethren, they'd pressure Hamas to stop firing missiles at Israel. In the longer term, the Arab world must end the Palestinians' refugee status and thereby their desire to harm Israel. It's time for the 22 Arab countries to open their borders and absorb the Palestinians of Gaza who wish to start a new life. It is time for the Arab world to truly help the Palestinians, not use them.
