Born Phoebe Katz, the hint of the exotic about her comes from a Chinese grandfather, but the rest of Cates' ancestry - and that figure - are 100% shtetl. Although an excellent actress, Cates rose to fame mostly because she spent 1982 completely undressed, appearing nude in Paradise and the iconic Fast Times at Ridgemont High. She later appeared in Gremlins and Bright Lights, Big City before being snapped up by man of good taste Kevin Kline and essentially retiring.
